The College Board recently released its second annual AP Honor Roll, naming West Chester Area School District on the list of only 367 public school districts in America and Canada.
The honorees are distinguished for “simultaneously expanding opportunity and improving performance,” according to a statement released from CollegeBoard.com.
West Chester met that criteria this year with a rise in students enrolled in AP classes (from 917 to 990) while retaining an 80 percent rate of passing or higher marks, reports dailylocal.com.
AP courses offer high school students a chance to earn credits for college. The exam is scored on a scale of 1-5, and students who earn a 3 or above usually receive credit.
90 percent of colleges and universities in the U.S. accept AP courses for credit, according to dailylocal.com.
West Chester is a good example of the great job schools in Pennsylvania are doing. The state has the most districts on the Honor Roll, with a total of 34, as listed by Collegeboard.com.
"These school districts have achieved something truly remarkable. They managed to open the doors of their AP classrooms to many more students, while also increasing the percentage of students earning high enough AP Exam grades to stand out in the competitive college admission process and qualify for college credit and placement," said Trevor Packer, the College Board’s senior vice president of Advanced Placement and College Readiness, in the released statement.
