Firefighters at the Dover Air Force Base say they are planning to build a Sept. 11 memorial.
The Eagle Firefighters Association, which is not affiliated with the Air Force, says they will use two large pieces of steel from the World Trade Center as part of the memorial. It also hopes to include dirt from the site of the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pa.
The steel for the memorial are pieces of horizontal beams believed to be from the 80th floor of Building 1 of the World Trade Center.
Plans call for the memorial to be built outside the Air Force Base Fire Department. It will be visible from the flight line to passengers arriving at the terminal.
The memorial was designed by Senior Airman Joseph Wunische, 436th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter. Two 8-foot-tall pillars will hold the two horizonal pieces of World Trade Center steel. Five smaller pillars of brick will surround the structure, each representing a branch of the U.S. military.
The department is hoping to raise at least $20,000 to pay for the project.
The unveiling of the the memorial is set for Sept. 11.
