$8K Missing From Police Evidence Locker

Upper Darby police are cooperating with the DA to try and find the missing money.

Earlier this month, Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood launched an investigation after discovering that $8,000 is missing from the station’s evidence locker, according to the Delaware County Daily Times.

It was discovered that the money was missing after the department received a court order to return what was confiscated from a home they were called to for a domestic dispute in 2009, reports the Daily Times.

“Police conducted a search and located $8,000 hidden in a bathroom cabinet and $5 in another place, jewelry and a cell phone,” Chitwood tells the paper.

The Superintendent says that all money taken as evidence is locked in the drop safe until it is counted and either kept in the case’s file in an envelope or sent to the District Attorney’s office, according to the Times.

However, this time, the money didn’t make it. Police say that it may have been burned in one of the department’s evidence burning.

The paper reports that the reason the money is missing is under investigation by the District Attorney’s office.

“I gave them all the records. Right now, it is being handled as missing property.” Chitwood tells the Delco Times.
