$875K in Jewelry Stolen from Rittenhouse Home

Man robbed Rittenhouse Square apartment in the middle of the day, police say

Philadelphia Police are searching for a man who was caught on surveillance video stealing $875,000 worth of jewelry from an apartment in Philadelphia’s chic Rittenhouse Square.

The robbery occurred in the middle of the day on Jan. 18 at an apartment in the Dorchester on the 200 block of Rittenhouse Square, according to police.

The suspect entered the apartment at 11:40 a.m. and after stealing the jewelry he fled via the elevator and exited the rear of the building to Locust Street, police say.

The victim, a 79-year-old woman, told NBC10 she is distraught over the theft. She also says some of the stolen jewelry dates back to the 1950s.

"It's terrible," said Dorchester resident John Carr. "It looks like somebody cased her."

Apartment security posted warning letters in the building after the robbery.

"It was saying to make sure you keep your doors locked and if you saw any suspicious people walking around the building to notify the people at the front desk," said Dorchester resident Caroline Robinson.

Police are asking local jewelers and pawn shop owners in the area to be on the look out for the stolen necklaces, gold rings and earrings.

"We believe this job will come in," said Philadelphia Police Lieutenant Patrick Doherty. "It's just a matter of putting it together, identifying the guy and we have the video. Even the gentleman in the video, the best thing for him is to contact us. Let's try to get some of the jewelry back."

The suspect is described as a bald black male, about 30 years old, standing at about 6-feet-1-inch tall, with a large build, according to police. He was wearing a green or blue jacket, a dark knit hat and dark jeans.

Police advise all jewelry owners to take a photograph of their jewels in case of theft. Anyone with information on the robbery should call Philadelphia Police at 215-686-3093.
