77-Year-Old ‘Peacemaker' First Murder of 2012 in Philly

A 77-year-old man who was trying to stop a fight in front of his South Philly home was the first murder casualty of the year, authorities say.

The first person murdered in Philadelphia this year was only trying to be a peacemaker, authorities say.

Seventy-seven-year-old Joseph Testa went outside of his South Philly house minutes before midnight New Year’s Eve when he heard shouting.

He saw a heated argument going on between his 43-year-old nephew James Testa and his neighbor’s brother-in-law 52-year-old Santo Mancuso, reports the Inquirer. The subject of the brawl: parking spaces.

While Testa tried to intervene, Mancuso pulled a knife and stabbed the elderly man three times, reports the Inquirer. Mancuso has already served time in prison for murder, authorities say.

The retired hospital security guard died of his injuries at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania 49 minutes after midnight Jan. 1, reports the Inquirer.
