9-Year-Old Boy Killed in Hit and Run

The child was dragged five blocks

Wilmington Police said a teenager is allegedly responsible for hitting then running over a 7-year-old boy Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said it happened around 3 p.m. at 23rd and Lamont Streets when a teenager, who was behind the wheel of the car, struck Tommy White, Jr. while he was riding on an electric scooter.

Police said the driver dragged the boy about five blocks before stopping the car and ran from the scene.

“Several people were in the car and they all fled before police arrived,” said Sergeant Mark Lemon of the Wilmington Police.

Witnesses said residents tried to lift the car off the 2nd grader. The young boy had severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“My father passed out,” said Shane Griffin, the victim’s uncle.

Police sources said all the people in the car including the driver were juveniles and are being questioned by police.

Wilmington Traffic Division is currently reviewing surveillance tape taken from cameras in the area.
