7 Rescued After Boat Overturns During Fireworks Show

Seven people watching a fireworks show on a southern New Jersey waterway were rescued by state police troopers after a wake from a passing vessel caused their boat to overturn.

Authorities tell the Asbury Park Press that six adults and an 11-year-old child were in the 18-foot boat when it flipped over in the Toms River around 9:50 p.m. Thursday. The accident occurred as several boats began departing from the area shortly after the show concluded.

The child was wearing a personal floatation device, but most of the adults couldn't swim. All seven went in the water, but the four troopers were able to quickly get them out.

No injuries were reported.

The troopers from the Marine Services Bureau were in the area to help with boat traffic.
