Alleged Arsonists Torches 7 Cars

Southwest detectives and the fire marshal are investigating the cause of the fires.

Officials believe a firebug torched more than a half dozen cars sometime overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

The fire marshal was investigating the suspected arson fires in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia.

Southwest detectives say that seven cars were reported on fire around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning -- a rude awakening for the car owners.

"We heard two loud booms and I thought it was someone loading something into a truck," said Oscar McCullough -- one of the car owners. "My mother and law comes in and says there's smoke outside so we go out and look... and I saw my car in flames."

Five of the vehicles were found on the 1900 block of Georges Lane, another on the 1800 block and one car on the 5300 block of Berks Street, according to police.

The cars were parked at the time of the fires and there were no injuries or arrests.

Police were searching for leads on who torched the vehicles and what was used to ignite the flames.
