Truck Dumps Load on I-676 Ramp to I-76

A truck overturned on the ramp between two of Philadelphia’s busiest roads early Christmas Eve causing a traffic backup.

The wreck left the ramp from westbound Vine Street Expressway (Interstate 676) to the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) toward the airport closed around 5:15 a.m. Wednesday. The road remained closed for more than six hours.

A pickup truck overturned on the sharp curve dumping its load and fuel onto the roadway as rain fell. The driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police blocked the ramp and forced all westbound traffic from 676 onto the westbound Schuylkill Expressway. Traffic backed up down 676 as all traffic merged onto I-76. After about an hour, police diverted all traffic off at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

the ramp finally reopened around 11:45 a.m.

The holiday travel mess also hit the rails. SEPTA said downed overhead wires cut service on its Media/Elwyn Regional Rail line. Limited service ran between Secane and Philadelphia. Service remained suspended between Secane and Media.

The agency had earlier suspended all service on the Media/Elwyn line.
