6 of PATCO's Rehabilitated Railcars Set to Go In Service

Commuters who ride PATCO trains between southern New Jersey and Philadelphia are getting upgraded seats.

Delaware River Port Authority officials said Wednesday at their board meeting in Philadelphia that six refurbished railcars will be put in service on May 28 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Those are the first in a $194 million project to rehabilitate all of the agency's 120 train cars. The DRPA oversees PATCO.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports PATCO expects to bring more rebuilt cars into the system on a monthly basis.

The new cars have bicycle and wheelchair parking areas, brighter colors, new seats and upgraded heating and cooling systems.

The cars themselves entered service in 1969 and 1980 and have not had a major upgrade.
