302-Year-Old Delaware Church Holds Final Service

A 302-year-old Delaware church congregation has held its final service after falling on hard times.

The News Journal reports about 150 people gathered Sunday to say their goodbyes to Pencader Presbyterian Church in Glasgow. Former pastors joined in celebrating the long history of the church during a two-and-a-half-hour service.

Pencader was founded in 1710 by Welsh immigrants. During the Revolutionary War, the church was once used as a hospital. The original meeting house burned and a second building opened in 1782, and the current building dates back to 1852.

The church celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2010. Church officials say expenses have exceeded the congregation's revenues. Ownership of the building will revert to New Castle Presbytery.

Another congregation from Elizabeth AME Church will continue to worship in the building.
