30,000 SSNs Exposed at Penn State

Penn State computers hacked

Nearly 30,000 people may have had their Social Security numbers exposed on infected computers at Penn State, say university officials.

Though there’s no evidence yet that the private information has been taken by other parties, the university’s computers were hit by “malware,” or malicious software, officials said Tuesday.

More than 14,000 of the records were breached at the main University Park campus, while another 15,000 were at an unnamed branch that is still investigating the incident.

University officials notified the people whose social security numbers were compromised. The first announcement of the privacy breach went out Dec. 23.
