3-Year-Old Dies After Port Richmond Fire

Toddler dies, two brothers still in critical condition and grandfather is on life support

Three-year-old Nicholas Budzilo, who suffered severe burns in yesterday's blaze in his family's Port Richmond row home, died Wednesday.

The toddler's two brothers, Christopher, 5, and Jacob, 1, remain in critical condition at St. Christopher's Hospital. His grandfather, Gene Budzilo, 50, is on life support, and his mother, Debbie Budzilo, who is 6-months pregnant, remains in stable condition.

They were all badly injured after a fire broke out inside their home on the 2700-block of Madison Street at about 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire broke out on the second floor of the two-story row home and quickly spread, officials said. All five were rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in critical condition Tuesday.

"The youngest of the three has the best survival rate, but he doesn't even look good," family member Juanita Adams told NBC Philadelphia Tuedsay. "He's burnt -- his face, his head -- 60-percent of his body is burnt."

Debbie's husband and the boys' father was at work when the fire began at the home. When he learned of the blaze he was only told one of his children were hurt.

"He was not told that his father, wife and three children were taken [to the hospital]," Adams said. "So he got here to his whole entire family being in the hospital."

Family members say the family was preparing to move from the now gutted home in just a few weeks.

Philadelphia Fire officials are still searching to find the exact cause of the fire.
