Tractor-Trailer Crash Kills 2, Closes Pennslyvania Highway

Authorities say the driver and a passenger of a tractor-trailer were killed when the rig struck a bridge support column on an eastern Pennsylvania interstate.

The Lehigh County coroner's office said the accident happened shortly before 1 a.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 78 in Upper Saucon Township.

The 42-year-old man driving the rig and his 38-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene at about 2 a.m. Monday.

State police said a second tractor-trailer struck the wreck, but its driver was uninjured.

Autopsies are scheduled Tuesday. The coroner said "extensive forensic testing will be needed for identification purposes" for both victims.

The eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed after the early morning crash but were reopened later in the morning. The accident is under investigation.
