2 Killed, 5 Wounded in Separate Shootings

Two people were killed and five others were wounded in two separate shootings in Newark.

Authorities say both shootings occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, but it's not clear what sparked either incident. Investigators are also trying to determine if there is any link between the two shootings.

Two people were killed and three others were wounded in the first shooting, which occurred near Livingston Street and 18th Avenue. Authorities said 36-year-old Clifton Purkett of Newark was pronounced dead at the scene, while 37-year-old Rashid Pryor of Plainfield died later at a hospital.

Three other males were wounded in the drive-by shooting.

Essex County prosecutors say the victims were outside a school when they were shot, and at least some of the victims apparently were targeted by the shooter.
