3 Firefighters Injured Battling House Fire

One firefighter remains hospitalized, the other two have been released

Three  firefighters were injured Friday afternoon while battling a house fire in Upper Darby.

The fire broke out just before 4:00 p.m. on the 200 block of Sheffield Road.

An NBC10 crew was there as those firefighters were pulled from the house.

The firefighters have been identified as Sam Caroluzzi, John Heffernan Jr., and JR Schultz, pictured below. Schultz was unconscious when he was pulled out of the house. Authorities say he's  now awake and alert at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The two other firefighters, Heffernan and Caroluzzi, were both released from Delaware County Memorial Hospital on Friday night.

NBC10's Cydney Long spoke exclusively with Caroluzzi who says a living room ceiling of the home came crashing down on them. "It knocked everybody down on the ground and we had to actually dig JR out, he was totally covered in plaster," Caroluzzi said.

The family living inside the home, including 2 adults, 5 kids, and 2 pets escaped the house unharmed. Fire officials say the blaze began in the kitchen of the home. The Red Cross is offering assistance to the family.
