Girl, Grandmother Die in Easter Morning Fire

Three others survived the Florence Twp., New Jersey fire

An eight-year-old girl and her grandmother died in an early morning house fire in Florence Township, New Jersey. Fire officials say the young girl, Kayla Macario and Darlene Weir, 53, were trapped on the second floor.

Investigators say that the fire broke out in the 300 block of West Second Street in Florence Township at around 2 a.m. Neighbor Ed Myatovich tells NBC10 that he "called 911 and then came out running across the street [and] asked if everybody was out of the house."

"The mother's head came out of the window and smoke was puring out over her head, she was just yelling for help," Myatovich said. "I tried to break the back door window. We couldn't get in."

Kayla's mother and her two-year-old sister got out alive. A friend of the family, 23-year-old Chelsea Donagan, was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

"It's terrible. It's a shocker. I'm just, I'm upset," Myatovich said. "It's Easter Sunday, a young lady, eight years old ... it's just devastating it really is."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
