1st-Degree Murder Conviction in 2011 Pa. Slaying

A man has been convicted of first-degree murder in a shooting death in the parking lot of a western Pennsylvania strip mall almost two years ago.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says some jurors cried as the verdict was announced early Saturday in the case against 37-year-old Raymond Rivera of Arnold.

Rivera testified during the Westmoreland County trial that he shot 37-year-old John Evans of New Kensington in self-defense in October 2011.

He was also convicted of attempted murder in shots that wounded a friend of the victim.

The defendant faces a mandatory life term without possibility of parole.

Rivera and Evans worked in shops across the street from each other. Defense attorneys said they had been feuding for months, and Rivera said he feared the victim and his friends.
