18-Year-Old Charged in Grocery Store Shooting

Police arrested 18-year-old Angel Nieves who they say shot and killed a Good Samaritan during a double shooting at a Philadelphia grocery store.

Philadelphia Police have charged a second person in connection to a double shooting at a grocery store in Hunting Park.

On Sunday, March 18, police say an armed man who they identified as 26-year-old Edward Friedland, entered the La Familia Supermarket on the 3300 block of N 5th Street in what they believe was a robbery attempt.

Police say Friedland and the store owner, 34-year-old Antonio Monegro, exchanged gunfire resulting in both men being struck.

“The gunman then fled the store,” said police Capt. James Clark. “Both the gunman and the store owner, both of their guns were left on the scene.”

Investigators say Rafael Ramos Del Valle, 26, was inside the store during the time of the shooting. Del Valle picked up Monegro’s gun and chased after Friedland, according to police.

He was then shot and killed by another man on 5th Street and Sedgley Avenue, according to police.

“He was shot several times in the back,” said Captain Clark. “Then the male stood over the top of him and fired one more shot, striking him in the head.”

Friedland was later arrested at a local hospital. He is charged with attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault and other related offenses. Monegro was treated for a stomach wound.

Police identified Angel Nieves, 18, as the man who shot and killed Del Valle. Nieves was arrested on Tuesday and charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, robbery and other related offenses.
