16-Year-Old Charged With Murder in Deadly Southwest Philadelphia Basketball Game Shooting

Homicide detectives say the shooting stemmed from an argument over the outcome of a basketball game

A teenage boy in Philadelphia stands charged with killing a peer and injuring two others following an apparent beef over a basketball game.

Joshua Richardson, a 16-year-old from West Philadelphia, was charged Thursday with the shooting which took place last Monday night on a playground at 60th Street and Baltimore Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia, according to police.

Detectives say Richardson came out of an alley and opened fire on three boys as they walked off the basketball court following a game. The teens, ranging in age from 14 to 16 years old, were all hit by the gunfire.

15-year-old Tyhir Barnes was shot in the face. Paramedics rushed him to Penn Presbyterian Trauma Center, where he later died.

The 16-year-old boy was hit in his leg and 14-year-old was hit in the arm, police said. Both are recovering.

Richardson and the teens apparently had an argument the week before about the outcome of a different basketball game.

Barnes was a student at Boy's Latin and was heading into 9th grade.

Richardson faces a flurry of charges including murder, violation of the uniform firearms act, attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault.

Attorney information was not immediately available for Richardson.
