NJ Woman Fatally Throws Neighbor's Dog into Traffic: DA

The Newark woman allegedly grabbed her neighbor's Shih Tzu by the throat, ran outside and threw it into oncoming traffic

A Newark woman who allegedly threw a small dog into traffic during a dispute over a parking spot has been indicted on animal cruelty charges.

Haniyyah Barnes, 25, also faces charges of burglary, theft and criminal mischief in the indictment handed up Wednesday by an Essex County grand jury.

Prosecutors say Barnes kicked in the door of a neighbor's home and threatened and assaulted a person there. When the family's Shih Tzu ran into the room and barked at Barnes, she allegedly grabbed the dog by the throat, ran outside and threw it into oncoming traffic.

The dog was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Prosecutors say the incident was witnessed by a Newark police officer who happened to be patrolling in the area.
