12-Year-Old Lied About Sex Assault: Police

Police say girl was having adjustment issues because of a recent move to Delaware

A Newark, Del. community was horrified to hear that a 12-year-old was sexually assaulted in their town home neighborhood last week.

Now police say the girl lied.

A 12-year-old girl who reported she had been sexually assaulted on the block of South Silversmith Lane near Old Baltimore Pike March 23 made up the story, according to New Castle County Police.

Police had said the girl claimed a man grabbed her from behind while she was walking home from school and sexually assaulted her near a wooded area in the Christina Green community at about 3 p.m. that Wednesday.

The girl told police that she fought off her attacker and left her backpack in the woods while she ran to neighbors for help

Officers now say the alleged assault did not occur and the girl was having adjustment issues because of a recent move to Delaware.

The case is being reviewed by the Attorney General's office.
