11-Year-Old Saves Classmate from Choking

A sixth grader uses the Heimlich maneuver to help his fellow classmate

An 11-year-old boy at Pennridge North Middle School in Perkasie, Pa. is being hailed as a hero after saving his classmate's life.

Last week during lunch, sixth grader Ryan Shire began choking on a mozzarella stick when fellow classmate Brian Kennedy noticed and immediately jumped up to perform the Heimlich Maneuver.

Kennedy, a Boy Scout of six years, credits his training to summer camp where he learned the life-saving maneuver, according to Phillyburbs.com.

“He just jumped up and did what he was obviously trained to do,” assistant principal, Matthew Cole told the Philly Burbs.

Shire suffered no injuries.

“It was just reaction” the heroic sixth grader tells Phillyburbs.com.
