Hundreds of Jobs Cut in Camden County

Camden County government cut deeply into its work force on Friday to make up for a massive budget shortfall.

Two hundred and sixty county workers received lay off notices Friday, to go into effect April 4, reported the Courier-Post.

Cuts were distributed across many departments, ranging from painters to corrections workers to clerks.

County leaders said that finances are the worst they have ever been in Camden County history.

"The economy has devastated our revenue," said Camden County Freeholder-Director Louis Cappelli Jr.  "That, along with increased expenses from the state as well as increased costs in everything from electricity to benefits, have combined to give us the biggest budget gap we've ever had in the history of the county."

Even for those that did not get cut, the county will institute 22 days of furloughs for the rest of the year.  Workers will have unpaid days off every other Friday.

Those cuts do not include the layoffs planned for the prosecutor's office.  Officials said they will layoff one quarter of the 230 workers in that office on Monday.  In January, Camden City cut 160 police officers and 60 firefighters.
