Red Cross Issues Urgent Call for Blood Donations

Blood collections seen as crucial before Hurricane Irene arrives

The American Red Cross is urging immediate blood donations prior to Hurricane Irene’s arrival in the region.

The Red Cross is urging people who are eligible, to give blood as soon as possible because the hurricane could affect blood collections along the east coast at a time when the nation’s blood supply is already low.

The Red Cross is working to stabilize the blood supply after summer shortages

β€œIt’s the blood that is already on the shelves that helps save lives before, during and after a disaster,” said Anthony Tornetta, American Red Cross Regional Communications Manager.

According to Tornetta, about 44,000 blood donations are needed every day, nationwide, to meet the needs of victims of accidents, diseases and people with blood disorders. And, obviously the need for blood rises when disaster strikes, even though blood donors may find it difficult or impossible to make a donation.

Those eligible to be blood donors include people who are 17 years old (16 with parental permission in PA and NJ), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health.

Blood donors can call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit the blood donor website, to find an American Red Cross blood drive in their area.
