Governor to Sign Bill Clearing Way for Heroin Antidote

Delaware police to carry heroin antidote

Police officers in Delaware will soon be carrying emergency antidotes that could help save the lives of people who have overdosed on heroin.

A bill being signed into law Monday by Gov. Jack Markell allows trained police officers to carry the drug naloxone, a heroin overdose antidote known by the brand name Narcan.

The new law does not mandate the police departments require their officers to carry the antidote, and it provides immunity from liability to police officers who administer the drug in good faith to someone they believe is suffering an overdose.
