Giant Stops Selling Beef With “Pink Slime”

A Pennsylvania-based grocery chain is the latest to stop selling fresh ground beef containing the filler known as "pink slime.''
 
Giant/Martin's announced the move Thursday, citing concerns voiced by its customers.
 
The Carlisle-headquartered company said the U.S. Department of Agriculture has indicated that the ammonia-treated filler is safe for consumption. But it says it values its customers and their feedback.
 
The chain operates Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets and is a leading retail grocer in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
 
A growing number of major supermarket operators, including Kroger and Stop & Shop, are saying this week they'll stop buying ground beef that contains "pink slime.'' It's known in the industry as lean, finely textured beef.
 
An online petition seeking its ouster from schools quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of supporters.
