CHICAGO – A study from Norway sheds new light on the most effective use of mammograms.
Over 200,000 women participated in the study that tracked cancer over six years. Women who were screened every two years had a significantly higher rate of breast cancer than the women who were screened once after six years. The study suggests that had the women in the two-year increments held off, their cancers might have gone away on their own.
Some cases of spontaneous regression in cancer have been reported independently of this study.
The study does not show whether or not mammograms help prevent deaths due to breast cancer, it does provide some insight on drawbacks to the screening.
