Philly Tops Depressed Cities List

Here's a "Blueprint for Hope"

The message is hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. But for many people living with depression, it seems like hope is lost—especially if you live in Philadelphia.

More than 20 million American adults suffer from a mood disorder, like bipolar disorder or depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

And after comparing antidepressant sales, suicide rates and the number of days people reported being depressed, Philadelphia was rated the most depressed city in the country by Men’s Health magazine.

So it’s more important than ever that an event such as this come to our area.

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of Delaware County (DBSA) will sponsor Blueprint for Hope May 27, at 7p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel Philadelphia Airport.

The event hopes to explain the importance of creating a “blueprint” or personalized plan for managing depression and the importance of speaking with a health care professional about your symptoms.

Paige Hemmis, designer on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will be a guest speaker sharing her personal experience in fighting the illness.

Dr. Mike Cirigliano, associate professor of medicine and practicing internist at the University of Pennsylvania will provide tips on managing depression and the symptoms of the disease.

At the event, you will also get information on local support groups that can help.
