2-Year-Old “Beat So Many Odds”

LOS ANGELES -- A 2-year-old Azusa boy is recovering after receiving a kidney from a 14-year-old boy.

Vinnie Dodd has posterior urethral valves. The kidney condition required that Vinnie undergo dialysis.

Last month, he became the youngest patient to receive a kidney transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

"He beat so many odds," Vinnie's mother, Mary Dodd, told the Whittier Daily News.

The newspaper reported that doctors at Children's Hospital Los Angeles expected the newborn to survive for about one week.

"You'd never know he had a kidney transplant a month ago," Dodd told the newspaper. "He's full of so much energy."

Vinnie, who returned home from the hospital, has put on weight since the operation.

Doctors said young patients usually respond better when they receive a kidney from older people.
