Corbett Beats Onorato in Pa. Gov. Race

Republican Tom Corbett is Pennsylvania's new Governor after defeating Democrat Dan Onorato.

Corbett took 54 percent of the vote to Onorato's 46 percent.

"In the two years that I've been traveling Pennsylvania and particularly this last year, I told the people of Pennsylvania I would do what's in the best interest for Pennsylvania and I promise I won't let you down on that promise," Corbett said in his victory speech.

Onorato, the elected executive of Allegheny County, had to battle a very basic issue of name recognition throughout the race.

Both candidates positioned themselves as the man who would bring more jobs to Pennsylvania.

In order for Onorato to win, he needed a huge voter turnout, according to most analysts.

"I think that they're coming out and voting," Corbett said during a campaign stop on election day. "I think the people of Pennsylvania are going to send a message to Washington. They're sending a message to Harrisburg."

Even with the benefit of the party's biggest campaigners -- The President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Bill Clinton -- Onorato couldn't pull in the votes he needed.

Gov. Ed Rendell said on the morning of the midterm elections that if the democrats lost big, he'd blame it on a blurred message to voters:

"We've got to learn to explain and communicate what we've done a lot more clearly."

Corbett said the people's message was clear.

"The people have spoken...I hear you, Jim hears you, we serve the people of Pennsylvania," Corbett told supporters as he wrapped up his victory speech.

"We're no longer making campaign promises. It's now time for action and we will do that, starting the third Tuesday in January, 2011.
