Insurer, Penn System reach agreement

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and the University of Pennsylvania Health System announced today that they have reached agreement on a new multi-year contract. Their current contract was set to expire Saturday. Horizon had threatened to drop Penn from its network, saying the prestigious system was too expensive. In a press release, Patrick Brennan, the health system's chief medical officer, said the agreement covers 40,000 Penn Medicine patients. Daniel Emmer, a Horizon spokesman, and Susan Phillips, a health system spokeswoman, declined to say how many years the contract covers or whether Penn had lowered its prices.
