Get Your Piece of $44 Million

TRENTON — The IRS has some good news for the 43,000 New Jerseyans who forgot to file their 2005 tax returns: There's nearly $44 million waiting for you.

The money can still be collected if residents file their 2005 returns and postmark them by April 15. Otherwise, the money becomes property of the U.S. Treasury.

New Jersey's IRS spokesman Gregg Semanick estimates that half of those who could claim refunds for the 2005 tax year would receive more than $646.

Nationally, unclaimed refunds totaling approximately $1.3 billion are awaiting over a million people who did not file a federal income tax return for 2005.

The law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund. There is no penalty assessed by the IRS for filing a late return qualifying for a refund.
