Franklin Mills Adds Walmart

Box store giant to anchor Northeast Philly mall, adding hundreds of jobs

Attention shoppers, Walmart will soon be slashing prices at Franklin Mills Mall.

The mega box store chain is scheduled to break ground in March on its newest location at Franklin Mills in Northeast Philadelphia. Well, it’s more of a redesign than a groundbreaking as the 180,000-square foot store takes over the defunct Steve & Barry’s store that closed about four years ago.

The expanded Walmart location, which will be the largest at Franklin Mills, is expected to create about 250 new jobs on top of potentially hundreds of construction jobs, according to a press release announcing the new store.

The retail chain offers different fare than existing Franklin Mills anchors like SEARS Appliance, Burlington Coat Factory and Dave & Busters since it will sell a wide range of clothing, home goods and include a full grocery department.

“Adding another dimension to Franklin Mills’ unique brand of shopping, Walmart will provide enhanced convenience and value for our loyal shoppers,” said Franklin Mills general manager John Ahle. “This new addition will further boost our desirable retail, dining and entertainment mix, meeting consumer demand for true one-stop shopping.”

No word was given on when the Walmart will open.
