Uber Sued by 45 Philadelphia Taxi Companies

Uber has been sued in federal court by 45 Philadelphia taxi companies. Led by lead plaintiff Checker Cab Philadelphia Inc., the cab companies claim Uber is attempting to operate a taxi service without receiving legal authority to do so.

The plaintiffs claim that Uber has not been approved to provide "any type of transportation or dispatch service in Philadelphia" by the Philadelphia Parking Authority — the agency that regulates taxi service in the city. It even claims that Uber's popular smartphone app is not approved by the PPA.

The case opens with some particularly strong words: "Not since the days of bootlegging has there been a criminal enterprise so brazen and open as to attract hundreds of millions of dollars in investment from investment bankers and to operate in blatant violation of federal and state law as Uber. Their outrageous acts are legion, whether charging $100 in "surge pricing" to drive Australians away from last week's hostage siege, to hiring formally incarcerated felons, to threatening to investigate journalists' private lives."
