Creditors Accused of Secret Recordings

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Philadelphia Newspapers LLC is seeking permission to investigate whether its senior creditors secretly recorded at least one confidential meeting leading up to the company's bankruptcy filing.

The owners of The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News filed an application on Friday in bankruptcy court to hire a law firm to investigate the matter.

Philadelphia Newspapers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month in an effort to restructure its $390 million debt load.

It is illegal in Pennsylvania to record a conversation without the consent of all parties.

Philadelphia Newspapers CEO Brian Tierney would not discuss the filing.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 16.
