Orchestra Musicians Voluntarily Cut Pay

Music to our ears—Devoted musicians willing to sacrifice pay to keep art alive.

The Philadelphia Orchestra announced voluntary cuts, which will save them $4 million in 2010 and 2011, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“They’ve been truly amazing,” Philadelphia Orchestra executive director Frank Slattery told the paper. “What the musicians did here was pretty heroic, and they did it in a fashion that was as open and as giving as I can imagine.”

The move was made due to the possibility of a $2 million to $3 million budget deficit facing the orchestra.

The new agreement defers raises from 2009 to 2010, cuts recording revenue paid to musicians through electronic-media and reduces pension obligations, the paper reported.

The musicians also pledged to raise $500,000 on their own for the orchestra’s annual fund.

That said, sit back, relax and enjoy the sounds of the talented and dedicated musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
