Where the Money's Going

“The Recovery Act is designed to put people to work, to help families in Philadelphia, and to do it quickly,” said Mayor Nutter.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is the single largest domestic spending program in U.S. history designed to stimulate the economy.  And now, Philadelphians will be able to keep a close eye on how and where the money is spent on the city’s Philadelphia Recovery Web site launched Monday.

The site outlines what money the city is applying for, the projects which will get up and running and how Philadelphians will benefit from the allocated funds.

“We are committed to making all recovery information available on this website so that you can follow exactly how we are using every dollar of this unprecedented investment,” Nutter said.

A main goal of the Recovery Act, in addition to boosting the economy, is to create or save jobs.

So, if you take a look at funding and Public Safety, you will see $13.5 million was allocated to the city for a real time crime center and mural arts.  Regarding Health and Social Services, the city was granted $21.4 million for homeless prevention.   By looking at the fields receiving funding, you may get a sense of what jobs or employment opportunities will be available.

The Web site will be updated regularly to provide current information on the city’s use of federal stimulus funds, which projects the city will pursue with the funding and the evaluation of its proposals, according to a press release.
