Longtime Irish Bar on South Street is on the Market

An Irish pub and restaurant that is a Philadelphia institution is up for sale.

Downey’s at Front and South streets is listed for $2.9 million. It first opened in 1976 and has long been a destination for St. Patrick’s Day revelry, weekend fun and other occasions.

The seller is Domenico Centofanti, who has experienced some ups and downs with the bar and restaurant. At one point, it was on the television show “Bar Rescue” and was also the site of a murder-suicide involving Centofanti’s brother shooting his mother and then himself.
