Hotel to Rise Above Former Center City Studios

A plan to erect a skyscraper on land occupied by the fire-damaged office of Philadelphia International Records has taken another step toward construction.

Local developer Carl Dranoff announced Friday that French designer Philippe Starck will be the interior designer for the SLS LUX Philadelphia Hotel. Developers plan to construct the 47-story tower that would be part hotel, part luxury condos. It would require demolishing the record company's former offices.

The company put out hits by artists including Teddy Pendergrass, Patti LaBelle and the O'Jays. But its offices were heavily damaged by a fire in 2010.

Former producers at the company were honored Friday and signed gold bricks that would be placed in the foundation of the new building.
