Investigators tell NBC10 that criminals are posting fake rental ads on the web, trying to steal your money.
Long Beach Township Police are investigating four cases involving fraudulent summer rental ads on Craigslist.
According to authorities, it works like this. When a prospective renter asks about the listings by e-mail, they’re told to reserve the property by wiring a large deposit. But that money often goes to a foreign bank account, said officials.
The deals may be enticing, but police say it pays to to do your homework.
“In order for you to verify, you should call up a reputable real estate company in the area to get a comparable rate for what’s going to be charged. said Lt. Anthony Deeley of the Long Beach Township Police Department.
“Often times, if it’s too good to be true, it’s not true” Deely added.
