Sinkhole Closes Tacony Street

Water main break causes large sinkhole at intersection & leaves people without water for hours

A water main break caused a large sinkhole on the 5100 block of Unruh Avenue in the Tacony section of Northeast Philadelphia Thursday morning.

Philadelphia Police confirmed the break and 7-foot sinkhole at the intersection of Unruh and Wissinoming Street. That's in an industrial area between I-95 and the Delaware River.

The Philadelphia Water Department told NBC10 that a call came in around 8 a.m. about the large hole. A leak in an 8-inch water main break likely caused the sinkhole, a PWD spokesman said.

It was unclear what caused the main to break. Customers for several blocks were without water service after the break and the stoppage in service could last for hours, the PWD said.

Crews were on the scene. Chopper 10 captured images of a large hole surrounded by orange cones.

Some vehicles -- mostly commercial deliveries -- were only intermittently allowed through the area of the break, officials said.

By 4 p.m. water service was restored and one lane was able to get by the sinkhole, the PWD said.
