1 Dead in Burning Tractor Trailer Crash

At least one person is dead after a tractor trailer accident in Gloucester County.

At least one person is dead after a tractor trailer accident in Gloucester County. It happened on Main Road and Weymouth Road in Franklin Township. Investigators on the scene told NBC10 a car ran a red light and hit a tractor trailer, igniting its fuel tank.

"When the vehicle hit the truck, they traveled down the road a little further and struck a utility pole and transformer was on the pole," said Chief Michael Rock of the Franklin Township Police.

The tractor trailer caught fire and somehow landed on top of the vehicle with at least one person inside. One witness told NBC10 he saw the tractor trailer driver running from the burning vehicle right before it exploded. Police say the driver survived though they have not revealed his condition.

Firefighters say they had to wait until a utility company could shut down the power before they could put out the flames due to downed wires at the scene. While firefighters eventually were able to extinguish the flames, investigators say a person who was trapped inside the vehicle underneath the tractor trailer died. Investigators have not yet revealed if anyone else was inside the vehicle.

Crews are currently dealing with fuel spilled during the accident as well as power outages.
