Cop Hurt as Cruiser, SUV Collide

A Reading cop car was hurt after a violent crash Friday afternoon on the Bingaman Street Bridge.

It wasn’t immediately clear what happened outside of that a police cruiser and a SUV collided around 3:30 p.m.

The unidentified male officer driving the cruiser was seriously hurt in the crash, according to Reading Police.

He was taken to Reading Hospital in serious condition. By 9:15 p.m. he was alert and upgraded to stable condition, cops said.

The three people in the SUV were trapped and had to be rescued from the wreckage, according to dispatchers. Two were in critical condition while a third was in stable condition at Reading Hospital, police said.

The cop was responding to a call at the time of the crash but it's unknown if that played a role in the wreck, authorities said.

The part of the Bingaman Street Bridge where the crash happens spans the Schuylkill River. The bridge remained closed in both directions between 4th Street and Route 422 as authorities tried to figure out what happened.

The bridge finally reopened at 9:10 p.m.
