Montgomery County Officer Opens Fire on Driver After Being Pinned Between Cars

A veteran Montgomery County Pol ice officer opened fire on a suspect after that driver pinned the officer between two cars, police said.

The incident began when Lower Pottsgrove Township Police Officer James McCue saw a blue BMW driving erratically along E High Street near Sunnyside Avenue around 8:50 p.m. Thursday, said Lower Pottsgrove Police.

The officer put on his police lights and sirens but the driver continued to flee. A short time later fellow township Officer Ryan Smith joined the pursuit as the driver ran a red light and entered Pottstown Borough.

The officers caught up with the driver at High Street and Moser Road in Pottstown where McCue – a 6-1/2 year veteran of the force – pulled in front of the BMW in attempt to stop the chase, said police.

The BMW stopped and the McCue left his vehicle and began to approach the suspect. At that time, police said, the suspect accelerated and pinned McCue between the BMW and the officer’s vehicle before knocking him to the ground.

As the suspect began to flee, McCue fire several shots – striking the suspect at least once.

Despite being shot, the suspect was able to drive off.

Officer McCue was rushed to West Reading Hospital where doctors treated him for non-life-threatening injuries, said police.

About 20 minutes later, a resident on the 500 block of Clearview Street, which is about 3 miles away, reported a man inside a BMW with a gunshot wound.

Medics transported the unidentified driver to West Reading Hospital for treatment.

No word yet on what charges the suspect could face.
