Police: Off-Duty Officer Kills Robbery Suspect

A gunman picked the wrong man to pistol whip and rob this morning -- his victim was an off-duty cop who fought, then fired at the man, killing him, police said.

The off-duty officer is a traffic cop who has been on the force for 25 years. He was driving down Willow St. in the Spring Garden section of the city around 4 a.m.

He pulled up to a stop sign at 7th and the gunman, 24, hopped into the off-duty officer's car and told him to give him all his money, police said.

The off-duty officer and gunman got into a fight and ended up outside the car, investigators said, when the off-duty officer shot the gunman several times.

Both were taken to the hospital. The alleged gunman was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital.

The off-duty officer was being treated for cuts on his face.

Another man, who police say may be an accomplice, was taken into custody at the scene.
