Woman Allegedly Kills, Robs NJ Ironworker

A female acquaintance was arrested Friday for allegedly killing a retired South Jersey ironworker.

Lori Hummel of Gloucester City, N.J. allegedly killed Thomas Carbin by cutting his neck multiple times early Monday morning.

“Sometime in the early morning hours Monday, she inflicted serious injuries to Mr. Carbin’s neck with a sharp instrument, causing his death,” county Prosecutor Sean Dalton said.

Hummel, 39, had gone over to Carbin's apartment above the Tower Tavern on River Drive in Westville, N.J. Sunday night. At some point early Monday morning Hummel allegedly killed Carbin using a sharp instrument to his neck.

The motive for the crime was likely robbery. Hummel allegedly made off with gift cards, an undetermined amount of money and other items, prosecutors said.

“She was seen shopping at a local store later that morning,” Dalton said.

She faces first-degree murder, robbery and weapons charges.

Carbin's daughter found the 54-year-old dead Monday afternoon in his apartment.

The victim’s black 2006 Chevrolet Colorado pickup was discovered later that day outside the gate of Ironworker’s Local 399 union hall on Crown Point Road in Westville.

A public memorial for Carbin was scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. at that same union hall.
