Prosecutors in Montgomery County are looking at bloods tests and cell phone records to try and determine the cause of a crash that killed a mother of two as she jogged along a quiet Limerick Township road.
A teenage driver crossed the center lane of traffic and struck Merinda Thompson, 40, as she jogged yesterday afternoon, according to a preliminary investigation by the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office and Limerick Township Police.
In a press release District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said that Thompson was struck as she jogged near 441 N. Lewis Road in Limerick Township around 2:45 p.m. Monday.
Authorities say a yet to be identified 18-year-old driver was driving northbound on Lewis Road when he somehow lost control of the vehicle, crossed over into the southbound lane and struck Thompson as she jogged northbound.
The driver then crashed into a nearby utility pole, prosecutors said. Police say the impact of the crash threw the woman's body into a nearby parking lot. Thompson, identified by investigators as a mother of two, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The teenage driver was treated at Paoli Hospital for minor injuries in the crash.
Police say the teen driver did not give a statement, pleaded the 5th and would not allow them to search his cell phone. Today, Ferman said that investigators were able to take the driver's blood for testing and that they had his cell phone for testing.
