Smoldering Jug Causes Hazmat Situation in N Philly

Crews work to figure out what the substance could be

Hazmat crews responded to North Philadelphia Monday morning after a smoldering substance was found in a jug, fire officials said.

Around 10:40 crews were called to the 1500 block of W Girard Avenue after someone reported a yellow substance smoldering from a jug.

License and Inspections and others were also called to the scene. Crews were trying to find out what the substance is and if any more of it was inside the location.

It turned out that the substance was an acid used to clean bricks, according to the fire department.

An NBC10 cameraman reported from the scene that 15th Street was closed as crews worked. The situation was placed under control around 11:15 a.m., officials told NBC10.

No one was hurt..
