Large Sinkhole Stops Traffic Along Route 252

It was a traffic nightmare Wednesday afternoon as crews worked to fix a large sinkhole on Route 252 in Delaware County.

The road buckled around 4 p.m. -- dropping about a foot -- on Route 252 southbound right past Mary Jane Lane (near Route 3) in Newtown Square, Pa., according to PennDOT.

Chopper 10 filmed crews putting a temporary cover or plate over the hole.

The southbound lane remained closed while the temporary repairs were made but eventually it was reopened, PennDOT said.

The sinkhole was likely caused by recent heavy rains that caused issues with a drainage pipe under 252, according to officials.

Northbound traffic wasn’t closed, PennDOT said.

No official timetable was given for when long-term repairs would be made, PennDOT said.
